Metro Manila now ready for rainy season—Palace

MANILA, Philippines – This time around, we are really ready.

Malacañang on Wednesday said concerned agencies have made sure  there won’t be extreme flooding in Metro Manila, especially now that the rainy season has started.

“We have prepared for this. If you recall, there was extensive diggings in somewhere in España,” Presidential Spokesperson Edwin Lacierda said in a press briefing.

The Secretary said the Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH) created a catchment basin in the said area to keep flooding at a minimum.

“MMDA (Metropolitan Manila Development Authority) is also in charge of making sure that our pumping stations are going to function properly come the rainy season,” he said.

In case of typhoons, Lacierda said concerned agencies are already gearing up and are now storing pre-positioned goods.

Meanwhile, relocation for informal settlers, especially those in danger zones, continues.

“We made sure that informal settlers will be taken out of harm’s way,” he said.

The spokesperson also lauded the work of the Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (Pagasa).

“Our Pagasa, our weather bureau, is performing marvelously in terms of identifying the areas where a certain storm will hit. We have improved the service — the facilities of Pagasa,” he added.
