Calapan broadcaster shot dead

MANILA, Philippines — A former radio broadcaster of Calapan City in Oriental Mindoro was shot dead noontime Monday by unidentified gunmen riding in tandem on a motorcycle, police said.

Nilo Baculo, 67, unemployed and a former radioman at dwIM Radyo Mindoro, was gunned down by still unidentified assailants around 12:25 p.m. near his house at Barangay (village) Lalud.

Superintendent Glicerio Cansilao, Calapan City chief of police, told INQUIRER.net in a phone interview that the gunmen who ambushed Baculo managed to immediately escape after the killing.

“At present, Baculo does not belong‎ to any media organization. But we’ve been hearing he has enemies,” Cansilao said.

‎Policemen who responded to the scene were able to rush Baculo to Maria Estrella General Hospital in Barangay Tawiran where he was declared dead on arrival.

Baculo died from two fatal gunshot wounds, Cansilao added.

Leo de Leon, field reporter of dzSB 104.1 Spirit FM, who was at the crime scene, said in a phone interview that Baculo was shot twice in the chest.

Baculo was 500 meters away from his house when killed, De Leon said.

De Leon quoted Cansilao as saying the police “might have a hard time resolving the case because he (Baculo) has reportedly received several death threats.”

Senior Superintendent Ronaldo de Jesus, Oriental Mindoro police provincial director, in a phone interview, said their initial findings showed Baculo had “several enemies.”

Local mediamen, who refused to be identified, said Baculo was “controversial.”
