MANILA, Philippines — The days are expected to get wetter as the monsoon season approaches, the weather bureau said Thursday.

The Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration said many parts of the country will experience more rainy afternoons or evenings due to the formation of localized thunderstorms.

The ridge of a high pressure area will bring generally sunny weather in the morning and at midday over most Luzon provinces, but scattered rain showers and thunderstorms in the later hours, forecaster Alvin Pura said.

In the Visayas and Mindanao, easterlies, or warm and moist winds emanating from the Pacific Ocean, are the dominant weather system, bringing generally fair skies over the islands, he said.

Pagasa maintained its earlier prediction that the onset of the southwest monsoon, or “habagat,” would begin in one or two weeks, signaling the start of the rainy season.
