3 men meted jail terms for polluting canal

A CALOOCAN City court has sentenced three men to a minimum of six years and one day and a maximum of 10 years in prison for dumping liquid waste into a canal.

Judge Victoriano Cabanos of the Regional Trial Court’s Branch 27 found Allan Lumanog, Ariel Olaje and Arwin Reyes guilty of violating Republic Act No. 9275, or The Philippine Clean Water Act of 2004.

RA 9275 ensures the “protection, preservation and revival” of the country’s waters.

Lumanog, Olaje and Reyes were caught dumping 46 containers of liquid waste into a waterway in Bagong Silang.

Residents earlier complained about a foul smell in the area to barangay officials who traced the origin of the stench.

The dumped substance was subsequently subjected to chemical analysis, and found to contain high concentrations of copper and zinc, which are classified as hazardous wastes.
