TODAY, May 22, is the 147th birth anniversary of musician and patriot Julio Nakpil. Born in Quiapo, Manila, in 1867, Nakpil was a known composer and member of the Katipunan. He composed the Katipunan’s official hymn, “Marangal na Dalit ng Katagalugan.” In 1903, he revised the piece and gave it the title “Salve Patria.” It was first performed on the eighth death anniversary of Jose Rizal in Manila’s Teatro Zorilla. Nakpil married Gregoria de Jesus, the widow of Bonifacio, in 1898. He died on Nov. 2, 1960. Marielle Medina, Inquirer Research
