Ex-Laguna town vice mayor fights for life after shooting

crime sceneCAMP PACIANO RIZAL, Philippines—A former vice mayor of Famy, Laguna is in critical condition after being shot several times on Wednesday afternoon.

Amadeo Punio had just stepped out of a cockpit arena in Barangay (village) Tunhac in Famy around 2:30 p.m. when shot by motorcycle-riding gunmen, said Senior Superintendent Romulo Sapitula, Laguna police director, in a phone interview.

“(Punio) managed to run back inside (the cockpit) but the gunmen ran after him, still firing their guns,” Sapitula said.

Two other people sustained minor injuries in the shooting.

The gunmen escaped.

Sapitula said they have been looking into different angles, including politics, to determine the motive. Punio ran but lost in the last midterm elections, he said.
