QC dad calls for 40-kph speed limit on Katipunan

Citing the rising number of road accidents due to speeding and reckless driving, a draft Quezon City ordinance is calling for a 40-kph speed limit on Katipunan Avenue.

The proponent, District 3 Councilor Benedict Reyes, wants the restriction observed from White Plains to Tandang Sora, where violators face fines ranging from P2,000 to P5,000. Emergency vehicles like ambulances and firetrucks are exempted.

Reyes cited provisions of the Local Government Code which authorize city or municipal officials to regulate traffic on all streets and bridges within their jurisdiction.

Under the proposed measure, speed limit violations resulting in damage to property or loss of life will also be referred to the Land Transportation Office and the Office of the City Prosecutor for the filing of appropriate complaints.

If approved, the Katipunan speed limit would be lower than that imposed on another major Quezon City thoroughfare, Commonwealth Avenue, where the Metropolitan Manila Development Authority (MMDA) apprehends motorists who go beyond 60 kph. Julie M. Aurelio
