Strong 6.1-magnitude quake hits near Micronesia—USGS

WELLINGTON—A strong 6.1-magnitude earthquake struck near Micronesia on Thursday, geologists said, but no tsunami warning was issued.

The quake hit at 6:56 a.m. (2056 GMT Wednesday) at a depth of 10 kilometers (six miles), 99 kilometers south-southeast of Ifalik in Micronesia, the United States Geological Survey (USGS) said.

The Hawaii-based Pacific Tsunami Warning Center said there was no threat of a destructive widespread tsunami.
