The Philippine Sports Commission (PSC) brought American beach volleyball expert Eric Lecain to Cebu to help improve Cebu City Sports Commission’s (CCSC) grassroots program.
This undertaking is a result of Cebu City’s effort of improving the quality of sports in the region with the help of PSC.
Yesterday, a memorandum of understanding was signed by PSC’s Ricardo Garcia and Cebu City Mayor Mike Rama for the development of sports in the grassroots level.
Under the agreement, Lecain will be establishing a training pool for the Philippine beach volleyball with the help of CCSC, headed by chairman Edward Hayco.
CCSC executive director and Southwestern University (SWU) athletic director Ryan Aznar hatched the idea of the beach volleyball plan.
“This program will include the establishing of a headquarters of the beach volleyball team here in Cebu and our initial plan is to select the best players in the region,” said Aznar.
Aznar is also planning to put up a beach volleyball court inside SWU since Cebuano players usually train in the beaches of Liloan town, northern Cebu.
For Hayco, beach volleyball is ideal to develop here in Cebu because this sport is considered as one of the most watched in the Olympics.
Rama, on the other hand, is optimistic about the program for the youth of the PSC and CCSC.
“We can build a nation through sports,” he said. “In sports we can develop our own character, develop our own discipline.”
