15 dead, hundreds trapped in Turkish coal mine

ANKARA, Turkey—Turkey’s government-run disaster and emergency management agency has raised to 15 the number of people killed in an explosion and fire at a coal mine in western Turkey.

The accident Tuesday in the coal mine in Soma, some 250 kilometers (155 miles) south of Istanbul has trapped up to 300 people.

The government agency said some 20 people had been evacuated from the site so far, 11 of them with injuries.—Suzan Fraser
