BIR exec survives slay try

gun shotMANILA—An official of the Bureau of Internal Revenue survived an assassination attempt but was wounded on the right shoulder when unidentified men on a motorcycle shot at him repeatedly as he stopped his car at a traffic light near the Philippine Heart Center on East Avenue in Quezon City Thursday night, police said.

Daniel de Jesus, 46, chief of the internal investigation division at the BIR main office, is now recuperating from his injury in an undisclosed hospital after receiving initial treatment at the East Avenue Medical Center.

“The victim and his family did not receive any death threat and he did not have any enemies,” said Supt. Limuel Obon, chief of the Kamuning police station.

Obon said the attack happened at 11:40 p.m. on East Avenue and Matalino Street near the Philippine Heart Center, seconds after De Jesus, who was driving his government-issued silver Toyota Innova toward the Elliptical Road, stopped for a red light.

De Jesus was hit on the right shoulder but managed to slip out of his car and saw his assailants escape, Obon said. The victim then ran back to his car and drove to the Heart Center where he sought help. He was brought to the East Avenue Medical Center where he was treated for his lone gunshot wound.

Police officers responding to the shooting found nine empty .45-caliber casings and a deformed slug.

Obon said the victim was transferred to an undisclosed hospital where he is currently recuperating.
