MANILA, Philippines – Metro Manila Development Authority (MMDA) chair Francis Tolentino said the pump stations in Manila cannot eradicate flooding in the capital.

During the Flood Summit held at the House of Representatives on Thursday, Tolentino said the pump stations can only do much due to the garbage clogging the waterways.

“Even if we modernize our pumping system, it will still flood,” he said.

Tolentino noted that Metro Manila is a catch basin of water from the highlands.

“What government is trying to do is just mitigate flooding,” he said.

Tolentino said another way to mitigate flood is to clean public and rivers, where trash are usually dumped.
