Pasay jail reports hike in TB cases

MANILA, Philippines—Officials of the Pasay City Jail have been taking steps to prevent the spread of tuberculosis among male inmates after the number of cases went up starting in March.

Supt. Clint Tangeres, warden of the male dormitory section, said two of their jail guards have also been infected with one still confined in a hospital. The other has gone back to work after completing treatment during a two-month medical leave.

Since March, the city jail management has recorded 11 tuberculosis cases. Infected inmates have been isolated from healthy inmates as they undergo treatment.

Tangeres said the hike in cases may have been triggered by the heat and congestion. The facility currently has 700 inmates.

As a precautionary measure, all inmates are undergoing screening for the disease, he added.—Nina P. Calleja
