Broadcast journalist shot dead in Tawi-tawi

COTABATO CITY, Philippines—Unidentified armed men shot dead a broadcast journalist in Bongao, Tawi-Tawi, on Sunday night.

Journalist Richard Najid, acting manager of the DXNN PowerMix FM in Bongao, succumbed to multiple gunshot wounds after he was shot at about 7:30 p.m. Sunday, Babylyn Kano-Omar, manager of DXGD-AM, a Catholic Church-run radio also in Bongao, said.

Omar said Najid, who carried  “DJ Troy” as his radio name, was laid to rest at 3:30 p.m. Monday.

Before joining DXNN-FM,  Najid was a reporter of the DXGD of the Jolo Vicariat, said its former chief executive officer, Fr. Jonathan Domingo of the Oblates of Mary Immaculate. Domingo now heads the Notre Dame Broadcasting Corp, also a church-run media outfit.

Quoting police, Omar said the gunmen quickly fled from the crime scene near the victim’s home.  The motive of the attack and perpetrators remained unknown.
