Former military comptroller Carlos Garcia jailed

MANILA, Philippines – Retired Major General Carlos Garcia is now in jail at the New Bilibid Prisons and would be given the “normal treatment” due any inmate.

Garcia will serve a two-year sentence for misappropriating military funds during his term as comptroller.

An official who requested anonymity because he wasn’t authorized to talk to media said Garcia would be given the “normal treatment” in jail. He would wear the standard orange uniform and would be expected to follow the rules in the NBP, the official said.

Garcia arrived at the NBP where he was received by Lieutenant General Gaudencio Pangilinan and then went to the hospital for a medical check-up, a Radyo Inquirer 990AM report said.

Garcia, who was accompanied by his lawyer, remained quiet during the trip from the detention center at the Intelligence Service of the Armed Forces of the Philippines to the NBP, the official said.

Garcia was arrested earlier on Friday.
