Civilian hurt in Camarines Sur clash between Army troops, NPA

NAGA CITY, Philippines — A civilian was wounded in an encounter between suspected New People’s Army rebels and government troopers in Lagonoy, Camarines Sur early Tuesday morning, an Army official said.

Capt. Mardjorie Panesa, public information officer of the 9th Infantry Division, said the civilian, Bier Sabuco, was hit by a stray bullet during a two-minute firefight between 16 communist rebels and soldiers from the 42nd Infantry Battalion in Sitio Baliuag, Lagonoy town at 5:30 a.m.

Panesa said the Army troopers, who were with policemen from the Lagonoy Municipal Office, were conducting security operations when fired upon by the rebels.

Sabuco was hit on the arms and legs while passing by the area and was brought to the district hospital in San Jose town, Camarines Sur for medical attention.
