Village chief’s husband, companion sought in shooting of militia man in Davao Sur

MATANAO, Davao del Sur, Philippines—The husband of the barangay chairman of the Saub village here was being hunted down by police authorities after he and a companion were implicated in Friday night’s wounding of a militiaman during a shooting.

Senior Superintendent Michael John Dubria, provincial police director, said Pepito de Manuel and a certain Dominaldo Gulaya were tagged as suspects in the shooting of Rodrigo Saniel, 49, a member of the village’s civil auxiliary.

Saniel was fetching water at the back of the village’s gym when he was shot with a 12-gauge shot gun around 10 p.m. He was hit in the leg and was now recuperating at the Medical Center of Digos Coop in Digos City, according to Dubria.

Dubria said investigation showed that the men were seen approaching Saniel shortly before the shooting.

He said the police continued to investigate what had triggered the shooting even as the search for the two suspects went on, as of Sunday.
