No tsunami to hit PH after 6.9 quake jolts Solomon Islands–Phivolcs

MANILA, Philippines – No tsunami is expected to hit the Philippines after a strong earthquake shook Solomon Islands, the state seismologist said on Saturday.

A 6.9 magnitude earthquake jolted the Solomon Islands at around 9 a.m. Manila time on Saturday, the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs) said in its latest advisory.

“No destructive widespread tsunami threat exists based on the historical and tsunami data,” Phivolcs said.

“However, earthquakes of this size sometimes generate local tsunamis that can be destructive along coasts located within a hundred kilometers of the earthquake epicentre,” it added.
