MANILA, Philippines—The weather bureau has alerted residents in Eastern Visayas to possible flashfloods and landslides due to moderate to heavy rains brought by the low pressure area (LPA) formerly known as Tropical Depression “Domeng.”
Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (Pagasa) forecasters said the LPA is expected to move even closer to the region Tuesday morning as it was showing no signs of dissipating.
Forecaster Gener Quitlong said Pagasa anticipated the LPA to affect portions of southern Luzon, the Visayas and Mindanao, bringing rains over the regions as the weather system starts to cross the land mass.
“We no longer expect it to intensify into a tropical depression because it is nearer to the land mass,” Quitlong said.
As of 4 p.m. Monday, Quitlong said the LPA was 125 kilometers southeast of Guiuan, Eastern Samar. He said the weather in the Eastern Visayas on Tuesday is expected to be cloudy with moderate to occasionally heavy rains and thunderstorms, which could trigger flashfloods and landslides.
He advised residents and local disaster risk reduction and management councils to take all necessary precautionary measures and to monitor updates.
The rest of the Visayas and the Bicol, Mimaropa and northern Mindanao regions will be cloudy with scattered light to moderate rainshowers and thunderstorms, while Metro Manila and the rest of the country is expected to be partly cloudy to cloudy with isolated rainshowers or thunderstorms, mostly in the afternoon or evening.
