CEBU CITY, Philippines—A man was hurt while at least 29 houses were damaged on Tuesday afternoon when a tornado struck three communities in Barangay Mambaling, Cebu City.
A still unidentified man was wounded in the feet while trying to run for safety as the tornado blew away the roofs of the houses in Sitios Nava, Viking and Alaska in Mambaling, said Cebu City Councilor Dave Tumulak, chairman of the Cebu City Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council.
He said 29 houses were damaged when the tornado struck at 2:08 p.m. Tuesday.
The tornado also destroyed nearly all of the roof of the Mambaling Sports Complex in Sitio Viking, said Willie Go, Mambaling village chief.
Lamberto Geolin Jr., a resident of Sitio Alaska, said he was walking toward the highway to get a ride to the city proper when he noticed people scampering in different directions. Some of them were crying.
He then saw the tornado hovering over the roof.
Geolin said he decided to turn around and go back home to ensure his family’s safety.
The wind, he added, was so strong that he could not close the door of his house.
Fortunately, he added, his house was spared because it was located in the interior portion of the village and was covered by other houses.
The tornado proceeded to the waters off the South Road Properties (SRP). The tornado occurred when Cebu was on alert due to tropical depression Domeng.
