Today is the 143rd birth anniversary of patriot, historian and writer Epifanio de los Santos. Born in 1871, De los Santos is recognized as one of the best intellectuals in history and regarded as the first Filipino academician. He served as associate editor of La Independencia and cofounded other patriotic newspapers such as La Libertad, El Renacimiento, La Democracia and La Patria. As a politician, he was a member of the Malolos Congress and served as Nueva Ecija’s first governor in 1902. De los Santos was also appointed as technical director of the Philippine Census in 1918 and director of the Philippine Library Museum in 1925. Highway 54 from Caloocan City to Pasay City was renamed after him in 1959 by virtue of Republic Act No. 2140. He died on April 18, 1928. Marielle Medina, Inquirer Research
