MANILA, Philippines—There is no basis to declare null and void the results of the 2013 senatorial elections.

Commission on Elections (Comelec) chair Sixto Brillantes made this statement in reaction to a petition which seeks to declare null and void the proclamation of the 12 winning senators. The petition was filed by losing senatorial candidates Ricardo Penson, Hans Christian Señeres, Rizalito David, and Baldomero Falcone at the Supreme Court.

“There is no basis to void the election results … on the overall, everything went well during the last elections,” said Brillantes in an interview.

Brillantes said it would be impossible to void the election results since the winners in the senatorial race have already been proclaimed.

“On our end, the proclamation is over, the winners have been proclaimed. The poll results have already been consummated,” he said.

The election chief said the losing candidates should have filed election protest cases before the Senate Electoral Tribunal (SET).
