MANILA, Philippines— The Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs) on Wednesday said there was no tsunami threat to the Philippines following a powerful 8.2-magnitude earthquake that struck off Chile.
“Phivolcs does not expect a destructive tsunami threat to the Philippines from this event. As such no evacuation is needed,” Phivolcs said in a statement.
The quake, which struck at a depth of 10 kilometers, set off a small tsunami that forced evacuations along Chile’s entire Pacific coast.
