Locked in an embrace, grandmother, baby die in Taguig fire

MANILA, Philippines–‎A 68-year-old woman died while hugging her granddaughter, who just turned a year old, in a fire that struck a residential area in Taguig City before dawn Wednesday.

A radio report said sexagenarian Zenaida ‎delos Santos and her two grandchildren perished in a fire that hit their home along Paco Street in Coco Hills, Barangay (village) Bagumbayan.

Delos Santos’ grandchildren were identified as Roniel delos Santos, 8, and Rihana, who was supposed to celebrate her first birthday Wednesday.

‎According to the Taguig Fire Station, while Zenaida and Rihana died in an embrace, Roniel’s body was found near his grandmother and sister.

‎Senior Inspector Romeo Pepito Jr., chief of the BFP National Capital Region Arson Investigation, said in a text message sent to INQUIRER.net that the fire originated in the kitchen of Delos Santos’ home due to an unattended gas lamp‎.

The fire reached the house of one of Delos Santos’‎ neighbors but no one was hurt.

Pepito said the blaze broke out at 12:08 a.m., reaching the third alarm at 12:45 a.m.

The fire was extinguished by nine fire trucks at 12:55 a.m.

The ‎amount of damages was placed by the BFP official at P10,000.
