MANILA, Philippines—A teenaged nursing student landed in jail Monday night after a taxi driver he had robbed of more than P5,000 in Quezon City chased him right up to where two policemen were patrolling.
Cubao police station commander Supt. Ramon Pranada said Emman Paul Bonita, 19, told investigators he robbed cabbie Ronald Quintero, 37, of his day’s earnings because he had just lost P3,000 in an online gambling game at his apartment in Sampaloc, Manila.
The robbery happened around 10:15 p.m. Monday on P. Tuazon Boulevard in Cubao shortly after Bonita boarded Quintero’s Aigene taxi (UVC 361) in Sampaloc.
Without warning, Bonita pulled out a knife and divested the cabbie of his earnings of P5,300, Pranada said.
Scared, Quintero jumped out of the cab, but so did the robber, prompting the cabbie to get back into the driver’s seat and chase the fleeing Bonita, Pranada said.
The cabbie chased Bonita to the intersection of P. Tuazon Boulevard and N. Domingo Street where PO2 Alain Sigua and PO2 Roel Gascon, who were on patrol, arrested the robber. Bonita yielded a knife as well as the cash he had taken from Quintero, Pranada said.
