DZIQ: Mt. Bulusan spews ash—Phivolcs

Mt. Bulusan in Sorsogon spewed ash Friday morning affecting several villages in the area, a report on Radyo Inquirer Friday said.

MANILA, Philippines—Mt. Bulusan in Sorsogon spewed ash Friday morning affecting several villages in the area, a report on Radyo Inquirer Friday said.

The report said that the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs), was unable to record the measurement of the ash column that occurred at 12:25 a.m. Friday since it was dark and blurry.

Quoting Senior Science Research Specialist Jack Puertollano of the Phivolcs, the report said that residents living 5 kilometers from Bulusan felt tremors, accompanied by a rumbling sound after the explosion.

Phivolcs has recorded .5 to 2.5mm ash deposits in the towns of Irosin and Uban in Sorsogon. Affected villages were Cogon, Putting Sapa, Bulos, Bulan, Bacolod, Borboran and Anyog, the report said.

Mt. Bulusan’s status remains at Alert Level 1.

Bulusan is among 23 active volcanoes in the Philippines, which is located in the so-called Ring of Fire of volcanic activity around the Pacific.
Bulusan last erupted between March and June of 2006.
