4,500 people stranded by ‘Caloy’

MANILA, Philippines—More than 4,500 passengers were stranded Saturday in the Visayas and Mindanao due to Tropical Depression Caloy, the Philippine Coast Guard said.

A total of 4,501 passengers, 576 rolling cargoes, 61 vessels and 21 motor bancas were stranded in various ports as of 4 p.m. Saturday.

The Coast Guard said 1,543 people were stranded in the ports of Cebu, Tagbilaran and Dumaguete; 1,647 in Iloilo and Bacolod ports; 120 in Ormoc.

In Northern Mindanao, there were 1,191 people stranded in the ports of Cagayan de Oro, Surigao, Ozamis and Butuan.

The PCG said its units had been placed on heightened alert “to respond to any emergency situation.”
