MANILA, Philippines—Alliances among rival parties may be commonplace once the election season starts and it is perfectly normal, one senator pointed out.

In an interview with INQUIRER Radio 990AM Friday, Senator Joseph Victor Ejercito said that as the elections draw close, rival political parties may ally with one another to form “strategic alliances” especially in the large-scale national and presidential elections.

“Large strategic alliances are done especially during the presidential elections,” said Ejercito, who is part of the United Nationalist Alliance (UNA), which he said was studying the prospect of colluding with Lakas.

“Be it the Liberal Party, the Nacionalista Party, Lakas, when the election draws near, surely there would be alliances.”

Ejercito said that with the popularity of their party’s expected 2016 presidential bet Vice President Jejomar Binay, other groups may form “strategic alliances” with UNA to have better chances at winning and access to bigger resources.

“His momentum is there, the trust is consistent, I think we would have allies here,” Ejercito said.

He added that there are already potential alliances in the local levels and that his party is open to absorb other politicians who are friends with party members.

“We can form strategic alliances especially with our personal friends,” Ejercito said. “On the local levels, there is potential, though we have not yet talked about the national level.”

Ejercito said that UNA may announce its alliances late 2015.
