The University of the Philippines anthem, “UP Beloved,” was composed by Nicanor Abelardo who died on March 21, 1934, at the age of 41. Born on Feb. 7, 1893, he was a well-known composer and musician. Abelardo’s other famous works included “Mutya ng Pasig” and the kundiman “Nasaan Ka Irog.” The main theater of the Cultural Center of the Philippines and UP College of Music building were named in his honor.—Marielle Medina, Inquirer Research
