Did you know: Journalist Patricio Mariano

Today, March 17, is the 137th birth anniversary of playwright and journalist Patricio Mariano. Born in 1877 in Sta. Cruz, Manila, he served as editor of several revolutionary publications like Los Obreros and El Renacimiento Filipino. Among his award-winning works were the plays “Sampaguita” and “Ang Anak ng Dagat.” Mariano’s translations of Jose Rizal’s “Noli Me Tangere” and “El Filibusterismo” are also recognized masterpieces of Tagalog literature. He died on Jan. 28, 1935.—Marielle Medina, Inquirer Research
