MANILA, Philippines – Even before summer officially begins, the Department of Health (DOH) on Monday alerted Filipinos against six common diseases and conditions during the hottest time of the year.

“This summer, millions of Filipinos will again travel far and wide seeking fun and entertainment. The DOH warns against 6 common summer diseases or conditions that can adversely affect one’s health,” DOH said in an announcement.

These diseases are sunburn, flu, sore eyes, stomach ailments, skin diseases and rabies.

With much sun expected during the summer, DOH advised the public on timing their outdoor activities when sunlight is not at its peak.

“Sunburn can be prevented if you time your outdoor activities. Outdoor activities must be done in the early morning or late afternoon. Avoid the sun between 10 a.m.-2 p.m. Hide in the shade or seek cool places to prevent ill-effects of too much sun exposure,” it said.

“Avoid heat stroke by drinking 8-12 glasses of water a day. Remember not to stay under the sun too long. Holy Week penitents can also benefit from these tips,” DOH said.

Use of sunscreen products at least 30 minutes before going outdoors is also greatly encouraged.

Flu symptoms such as colds and cough are also common during the summer because of erratic weather that sometimes causes rains, DOH said.

“Cough and colds easily spreads even during the summer months as erratic weather bring sudden downpour from time to time. Senior citizens are advised to get vaccinated against influenza before the flu season begins in June,” it said.

Because of the spreading of the coronavirus that infects the respiratory system, health officials advise those who are feeling sick to stay home and to always cover the nose and mouth when coughing or sneezing.

“Our airports will continue to screen travelers as a routine precaution to prevent spread of diseases that may spread internationally,” DOH said.

The public was also warned against the consumption of street food and those that have been prepared beforehand as these may be contaminated or have spoiled faster because of the warm temperature.

“Vomiting and diarrhea follows consumption of contaminated food or drinks. This summer, be cautious of street foods and even with those prepared for out-of-town trips. Remember that food spoils easily during hot summer months,” DOH said.

As people cool themselves from the heat by going to the beach or swimming, they should also be wary of skin diseases from dirty water whether in beaches or pools.

“Skin diseases abound when one swims in dirty water or unmaintained public swimming pools. Remember to take a bath before and after plunging into the pool and please do not urinate in the pool,” DOH said.

Inadequate water from the dry season can also cause skin problems because of lack of bathing, it said.

Rabies infections from dog or cat bites are potentially fatal diseases.

“Make sure dogs are vaccinated against rabies. If you sustain dog bites, visit the animal bite center to get rabies vaccination,” DOH said.

“Sore eyes or conjunctivitis, when mistreated, can lead to blindness. More than just eye irritation, it can easily be due to harmful bacteria or viruses that easily spread to other people. Hand washing can limit its spread,” it said.
