DAVAO DEL SUR, Philippines—One soldier was wounded in a landmine attack by members of the New People’s Army in Davao City early Friday.
Troops from the Army’s 69th Infantry Battalion were on board a military truck when the landmine went off in Malabog village in Paquibato District in Davao City at 12:30a.m., a report from the 1003rd Brigade said.
“Accordingly, the troops immediately retaliated with fires after the explosion,” the report said.
A firefight that lasted for about five minutes ensued, and the rebels fled northwest towards Lumiad village.
The wounded soldier, whose identity was still withheld, was brought to the hospital.
On Sunday, 16 people — including four rescue workers — were wounded in two ambushes allegedly perpetrated by communist rebels in Bansalan, Davao del Sur.
