Today, Feb. 27, is the 27th death anniversary of the late Sen. Jose Diokno. Born on Feb. 26, 1922, he was known for being a nationalist, a human rights advocate and a legal luminary. When Martial Law was declared on Sept. 21, 1972, he was among the first members of the opposition to be arrested. Upon his release in 1974, he established the Free Legal Assistance Group which offered free legal services to victims of oppression under martial rule. He died in 1987 at his home in New Manila.
