MANILA, Philippines—The Lapu Lapu City Regional Trial Court convicted a former public-school teacher of Pajo National High School for sexually abusing his second-year high school student for four times from July to August 1997.
In a decision, Judge Eric Menchavez found Edgardo Potot guilty of violating Section 5(b) of Republic Act 7610 or the Special Protection of Children Against Child Abuse, Exploitation and Discrimination Act.
Potot was sentenced to suffer reclusion perpetua (20 years and one day to 40 years imprisonment) for each of the four counts and ordered him to pay the complainant P15,000 moral damages and P15,000 fine for each count.
However, Potot, who was previously convicted in three other sexual-abuse case remains at large.
