COTABATO CITY—A court sheriff was gunned down Thursday night under cover of darkness in nearby Midsayap, North Cotabato, police said.

Supt. Renante de los Reyes, Midsayap police chief, said Sheriff Juanito Diazon of the Regional Trial Court Branch 12 died from multiple gunshot wounds when a lone suspect fired at him at Crossing Agriculture here around 7 p.m. while there was power outage.

“Witnesses claimed to have seen the suspect but failed to identify him due to the prevailing darkness,” De los Reyes said.

He said the police were looking into Diazon’s work as court summons officer as possible motive in the killing.—Charlie C. Señase
