Pope John Paul II first visited the Philippines on Feb. 17, 1981 and stayed in the country for six days. He beatified the first Filipino martyr, Lorenzo Ruiz, on Feb. 18, 1981. His itinerary in the country also included celebrating Masses at Manila Cathedral and the cities of Baguio, Cebu and Davao. The late pope will be canonized along with Pope John XXIII on Apr. 27.
