MANILA, Philippines—Malacañang lauded the efforts of Iglesia Ni Cristo (INC) in its massive charity walk in Manila after it broke the world record for the largest number of people who participated in such events.
With the Guinness record established by INC, Secretary Herminio Coloma of the Presidential Communications Operations Office also praised the religious group for the sympathy it showed for the survivors of Super Typhoon “Yolanda.”
“What’s important is that they showed solidarity with those affected by the calamity,” Coloma said in a radio interview Sunday. “The cause was the assistance for Yolanda survivors.”
On Saturday, INC set the new Guinness World Record for the largest charity walk set in one venue, with some 175,000 participants shattering the previous record of Singapore of 77,500.
The number was determined through the wristbands that the participants, which began from the Cultural Center of the Philippines, dropped in a box at the finish line near Diamond Hotel.
“The world record was a consequence of the solidarity and sacrifice the group’s members showed,” Coloma said. “And we commend them for that.”
