Marijuana burned

Sixty-four sacks and three cartons of marijuana plants have been discovered by Army soldiers in a hinterland village in New Bataan, Compostela Valley province, over the weekend, police said on Monday.

No suspect was arrested, but the soldiers, belonging to the 28th Infantry Battalion, also found a homemade .22-cal. rifle at the site in Purok Pongpong, Sitio Cagan, Andap village, at 3 p.m. on Saturday, according to provincial police chief Senior  Supt. Camilo Cascolan.

Except for four sacks of marijuana weighing 23 kilograms, which New Bataan police are holding, all sacks were burned. Cascolan said. Frinston L. Lim, Inquirer Mindanao

Teacher dies in van fall

A teacher driving a van was killed while 13 of his passengers were wounded when the vehicle went wayward and plunged into a ravine in Buug town, Zamboanga del Sur province, on Sunday.

Abdulajid Lukman lost control of the steering wheel while negotiating the national highway in Barangay (village) Bulaan, according to Western Mindanao police spokesperson, Chief Insp. Ariel Huesca.

Jamar Kulayan, education secretary for the Autonomous Region in Muslim Mindanao (ARMM), said the victims were on their way to Marawi City to join the ARMM Athletics Association. Dad survives blast

A city councilor survived a grenade attack on Friday morning, five months after he and his wife were wounded when they were attacked by armed men in their house, police said.

Councilor Danilo de Guzman was not hurt when a hand grenade exploded in his yard in Barangay Malimba, said Senior Supt. Crizaldo Nieves, Nueva Ecija police director.
