MANILA, Philippines – Senator Nancy Binay on Tuesday came to the defense of her congresswoman-sister who won a condominium unit in a Christmas raffle in Makati, saying there is no law that prohibits a government official from joining such contest.
“Meron silang raffle, sinwerte talaga yung kapatid ko at nanalo sya so hindi ko rin nga maintindihan… yung Rockwell naman is a reputable company (They have a raffle, my sister got lucky and won so I don’t understand…and Rockwell is a reputable company),”’ the senator said when sought to react on netizens’ negative comments about her sister, Makati Representative Mar-Len Abigail Binay-Campos, who won in the Christmas raffle of Rockwell Power Plant Mall in Makati City.
And there was also nothing unethical, she said, if her sister would claim the prize.
“Kasi it’s a contest. Hindi naman sinabi dun na pag official ka or anak ka ng Vice President bawal kang sumali . Wala namang ganung restriction so I don’t see kung ano ang kasalanan.. parang blown out of proportion,” she said.
(Because it’s a contest. It does not say that if you’re an official or a child of Vice President, you can’t join the contest. There’s no restriction like that so I don’t see anything wrong…it’s just blown out of proportion)
“Hindi naman nya kasalanan na nanalo sya pero parang ngayon masama na nanalo sya dun sa contest. She won it fair and square,” she added.
(It’s not her fault that she won but now it seems that it’s her fault that she won in that contest. She won it fair and square.)
Her sister’s luck has aroused the senator’s interest to join similar contests and she would not mind risking public criticisms if she would do so.
“Parang na-inspire tuloy ako…kasi dati nagtatiyaga akong magsulat kaso hindi naman ako nananalo. E ngayon siguro next Christmas magpi-fill up na rin ako,” she said.
