Signal No.1 up in 18 areas

MANILA, Philippines – More areas in Visayas were placed under storm signals as Tropical Depression “Basyang” continued to move towards Leyte-Caraga area, the state weather bureau said on Friday.

The Philippine Atmospheric Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration said the following areas were under Signal No. 1 (or winds with 30-60 kilometers per hour):

Southern part of Samar

Southern part of Eastern Samar

Leyte

Biliran

Southern Leyte

Camotes Island

Cebu

Negros Provinces

Siquijor Island

Bohol

Surigao del Norte

Siargao Island

Surigao del Sur

Northern part of Agusan del Sur

Agusan del Norte

Camiguin Island

Dinagat Province

Misamis Oriental

Residents living in low lying and mountainous areas under Signal No.1 were alerted against possible flashfloods and landslides.

Basyang intensified into a tropical depression before it entered the Philippine area of responsibility. It now packed maximum sustained winds of 55 kph  near the center and moved west at 30 kph.

It was last located 768 kilometers east northeast of Hinatuan, Surigao del Sur. It was forecast to make landfall over Surigao provinces late Friday or early Saturday.

Moderate to heavy rains were forecast due to the weather disturbance.

Basyang was expected to exit PAR on Monday.

Meanwhile, fishing boats and other small seacraft were advised not to venture out into the eastern seaboards of Central and Southern Luzon and of Visayas due to Basyang and the prevailing northeast monsoon.
