The city government of Marikina is pushing the “One Barangay, One Product” project to create more sources of livelihood for residents. The project was recently launched by the Marikina Livelihood Training Center (MLTC) and City Social Welfare and Development Office.
With the theme “Sapat na Kita, Masaganang Buhay, (Sufficient Earnings, Prosperous Lives),” Marikina Mayor Del de Guzman urged local businessmen to produce one specific product per barangay (village) to enable residents to engage in economic activities that would help augment their income.
Barangay Nangka, for instance, has been declared a pilot area where “eco bags” will be produced to replace shoe boxes. “Aside from being an ordinary storage bag for shoes, these eco bags can also be used as a replacement for plastic shopping bags. With this, we can further encourage our constituents to practice the habit of recycling,” De Guzman said in an e-mailed statement.
According to MLTC, the first batch of eco bags will be released next month as 50 entrepreneurs have already signed up for the project in Nangka.—Niña Calleja
