The Marcha Nacional Filipina first played in 1898 and adopted as the national anthem by the Commonwealth National Assembly in 1938 was composed by Julian Felipe. Born on Jan. 28, 1861, Felipe was known as a talented composer and a staunch supporter of the revolutionary movement. His other works included “Philippines, My Philippines,” and “Un Recuerdo” which was dedicated to the 13 Martyrs of Cavite. Felipe died on Oct. 2, 1944 in Sampaloc, Manila.
