A man who had allegedly robbed the chief police investigator of Mandaluyong was killed while one policeman was wounded in what authorities claimed a shootout on Sunday morning.
Senior Superintendent Armando Bolalin, Mandaluyong police chief, said the encounter happened at a government housing area for policemen on Fabella St. in Barangay Plainview, Mandaluyong City, a few seconds after two men aboard a motorcycle held up Police Inspector Jaime Masilang, head of the city criminal investigation unit.
The still unidentified suspect was dead on the spot after sustaining gunshot wounds on different parts of his body while his companion managed to escape.
Responding policeman Senior Police Officer 2 Elmer Santos was rushed to Polymedic hospital for the treatment of his gunshot wounds.
Police said Masilang, then unarmed and wearing civilian clothes, was about to alight from his car when two men at gunpoint divested him of his jewelry, wallet containing cash, and even the keys of his car.
As soon as the robbers left him, Masilang quickly signalled to Santos, his neighbor, for help.
Bolalin said Santos gave a chase and shot one of the suspects. He, on the other hand, he was shot at least twice during the brief exchange of fire between him and the suspects.
The police have recovered the stolen valuables of Masilang but not the gun used by the slain suspect in the encounter.
The police are conducting follow-up operations to arrest the other suspect.
