MANILA, Philippines—Malacañang on Thursday said the restoration of death penalty in the country needs an extensive consultation to determine public sentiment.
“Because of its extensive implication, this matter needs an extensive consultation because this will involve a change in our law. Currently, we do not have a capital punishment,” Communications Secretary Herminio “Sonny” Coloma Jr. said in a press conference.
Coloma said President Benigno Aquino III and his Cabinet members have yet to deliberate on the issue.
The rash of crimes in the country has revived debates on the revival of the death penalty.
Former President and now Manila Mayor Joseph Estrada earlier announced that he wanted to revive the death penalty after the murder of a girl in Manila and a spike in crime rate in Metro Manila.
