Pasay cop chief axed over gambling issue

MANILA, Philippines–The Pasay City chief of police was relieved from his post Friday following an alleged rift with the mayor apparently over illegal gambling operations in the city.

Senior Supt. Napoleon Cuaton was replaced by Senior Supt. Melchor Reyes, former head of the National Capital Region Police Office’s (NCRPO) personnel department.

The turnover ceremony was held around 6 p.m. Friday, immediately after Cuaton’s relief order was issued by the Departmenf of Interior and Local Government (DILG) and Philippine National Police (PNP).

Cuaton’s relief came following an escalating tension between him and Mayor Antonino Calixto apparently over illegal gambling activities in Pasay City, sources said.

The Inquirer tried but failed to reach both Cuaton and Calixto for comment.  Tina G. Santos
