MANILA, Philippines – Forty four pieces of landmines believed to be belonging to the New People’s Army were recovered by military on security personnel in Agusan del Sur on Sunday.
Eastern Mindanao Command spokesperson Captain Alberto Caber said soldiers from the 1003rd Infantry Brigade were on security patrol in sitio Mampait, Mansanitas village past 8 a.m.
They recovered eight sacks of PVC pipes, batteries, detonating cords and improvised firing devices.
The residents reportedly requested for military security due to the sight of strangers roaming in the village.
“If the NPA are sincere about peace, they must stop manufacturing landmines as these kill people and destroy properties,” Eastern Mindanao Commander Lieutenant General Ricardo Rainier Cruz said.
Two NPA rebels surrender
Meanwhile, in Surigao del Sur, two NPA rebels surrendered to the military over the weekend.
The insurgents were identified as Robert Daging alias Alex and Abet Guinson alias Abet. They surrendered with their firearms to the Army’s 10th Infantry Division on Saturday noon.
Both NPA belong to the North Eastern Mindanao Regional Committee of the NPA operating in Surigao provinces.
