MANILA, Philippines – At least 4.5 million voter identification cards remained unclaimed in local poll offices, Commission on Elections (Comelec) spokesperson James Jimenez said in a statement.

Because of this, the Comelec this January will post a list of names of registered voters with unclaimed IDs outside its field offices, barangay (village) halls, and other public places, Jimenez said Thursday.

The Comelec en banc approved the posting of voters’ names with unclaimed IDs in Resolution No. 9837 dated Dec. 19, 2013.

“The Voter ID is a valid ID recognized by all government offices and banks in all legal transactions,” said Jimenez, director of the Comelec Education and Information Department (EID).

“The COMELEC deems the issuance and distribution of voter ID cards as a vital service to the public,” he added.

Jimenez said registered voters would need to bring a valid ID.

For questions, the public may call Comelec hotline (02) 525-9294, tweet their concerns to @COMELEC using the hashtag #VoterIDKo, or email [email protected], the statement read.

“The #VoterIDKo project manned by the COMELEC-EID Social Media Support Unit has already facilitated the release of almost a thousand voter IDs since its launch last Jan. 13, 2014,” Jimenez said.
