Shoemaker’s killers fall
TWO MEN believed to have stabbed and hacked a shoemaker to death were arrested in a police follow-up operation Tuesday morning. Jeffrey Ronales, 25, a construction worker and 22-year-old Roel Cabarles, a scavenger, were caught by officers of the Manila Police District homicide division headed by case investigator SPO1 Charles John Duran. In a report, Duran said Cabarles was arrested around 9 a.m. on A. H. Lacson Street, Sampaloc, Manila. He then told the police the whereabouts of Ronales who was caught near SM San Lazaro. The two were arrested after they were identified by a relative of their victim, Mateo Buyron, 53, through the footage taken by a closed-circuit television camera. On Monday morning, Buyron was asleep in his stall which also served as his shelter when the suspects attacked him, smashing his head with a hammer while the other stabbed him in the face with a knife. He later died of his injuries. The victim’s relative told the police that the two had quarreled with his uncle in December over a sleeping mat they borrowed from the victim. Maricar B. Brizuela
