MANILA, Philippines—The Bureau of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources (BFAR) on Tuesday warned the public not to eat shellfish gathered from Zamboanga del Sur, Zamboanga Sibugay, Bataan and Misamis Occidental after the provinces’ coastal waters were tested positive for red tide toxin.
BFAR Director Asis Perez said the laboratory results conducted by the bureau and local government units (LGUs) on shellfish gathered from Dumanquillas Bay in Zamboanga del Sur, and the coastal waters of Mariveles, Limay, Orion, Pilar, Balanga, Orani, Abucay, and Samal in Bataan are still positive for raised level of paralytic shellfish poison.
Sibuguey Bay in Zamboanga Sibugay is also now positive for red tide toxin, Perez added.
Perez warned the public that all types of shellfish and “alamang” (krill) harvested from these areas are not safe to eat.
