/ 12:28 PM May 11, 2011

WOONSOCKET, Rhode Island—Patrick Kennedy, a former Democratic congressman from Rhode Island, says he is enjoying life out of the spotlight following his departure from Congress this year.

The son of the late Massachusetts US Sen. Edward Kennedy told The Associated Press on Tuesday that he is focusing on building a personal life with his fiance, 32-year-old New Jersey school teacher Amy Petitgout and her 3-year-old daughter, Harper.

Kennedy says he makes it a point to be home at 7 p.m. every night to read to Harper.

Kennedy, who has struggled with addictions in the past, calls family life and love a “miracle cure.”

He says Supreme Court Justice Stephen Breyer will preside over the couple’s wedding at the Kennedy family compound in Hyannis, Massachusetts, in mid-July.
